ABOUT US
Dionysus Theatre is a unique non-profit, non-sectarian organization bringing the theater experience to those with disabilities as well as the able-bodied. Dionysus Theatre changes hearts and minds through professional productions, touring diversity troupe and theater arts classes, in constant pursuit of its motto, "Changing lives . . . one act at a time". Through original plays and musical scores, Dionysus educates, entertains, enlightens and empowers all who see us.
Operating independently out of the Jewish Community Center's Joe Frank Theatre, 5601 South Braeswood, Houston, Dionysus Theatre breaks down stereotypes and barriers surrounding those with disabilities. Audience members and actors alike are transformed through this extraordinary theater experience. By performing quality works featuring messages of acceptance and respect for all individuals, Dionysus Theatre demonstrates the positive impact of inclusion.
Dionysus Theatre was created in 1997 by Deborah Nowinski, in memory of her son, Dustin, to provide an opportunity for actors, regardless of disability or disadvantage, to share a comprehensive theater experience, Since 1997, Dionysus Theatre has grown from six actors and one show to four main stage shows a year, theater classes for people with disabilities, a youth theater that tours to schools performing children's shows, and a touring troupe! Many of our actors with disabilities have pursued higher education, have gotten better jobs and have become advocates for those who have no voices. Many of our able bodied actors have returned to school to major in Special Education, the medical field or doing outreach work around the world. We are so proud of actors past and present and look forward to the future.
In 13 seasons, we have seen actors find their voices, their hearts and in turn they have become global citizens. Our audiences have come to understand and accept people who may be “different” from themselves. We have tackled issues most theaters won’t attempt. We cast actors correctly bringing a texture to the written word. We truly, change lives.
Our mainstage performs four shows a year. Our newly created Youth Theatre goes to schools and educates the next generation about inclusion with high quality children’s shows. We also give children with disabilities a chance to dream of the opportunity to one day take the stage in Dionysus Theatre. New worlds open. Our touring troupe performs throughout the state for conventions and disability organizations with our originally written works. We bring life stories to fruition. Our classes are on-going for teens and young adults with disabilities. Skills learned in theater classes are then applied to real life. This is empowerment.
